Rationale:
Asia-Pacific governments are increasingly using spatial data in their day-to-day activities with the aim to improve government services to their citizens. With the rise in urbanisation and the increased population clustering within cities, there is the need for enhanced planning by all departments of national governments, viz. urban planning, environment, utilities, disaster management among others. Geographic information systems is one solution for governments to collect better data from not just satellite sources, but other sources of imagery as well. This workshop presents the latest capabilities and technologies in imagery sources and will use the real life example of the use of Landsat data to manage land, agriculture and emergency disaster management from Thailand.
Discussion points:
About your Workshop Leader:
Dr. Surachai Ratanasermpong Deputy Director GEO-INFORMATICS AND SPACE TECHNOLOGY DEVELOPMENT AGENCY, THAILAND
Dr. Ratanasermpong was the Director of the Geo- Informatics Center till 2003, before assuming his current position as Deputy Director in GISTDA - Thailand’s national space agency. GISTDA is responsible for all space related activities of the Government of Thailand and is under the Ministry of Science and Technology, Thailand. A specialist in geo informatics (GIS, GPS and RS), Dr. Ratanasermpong has also done extensive work on GIS applications for forest cover and land use mapping.
The world is increasingly being driven by rapid changes in information technology. As governments realise the potential of these technological advancements, there is an increased investment communications technology including spatial datasets like maps and imagery. However, the challenge to integrate and manage all this data into a single platform remains. This workshop will look at the challenges of developing a national Spatial Data Infrastructure, which would aim to be a national resource for spatial data for access by government, private sector and common citizens. With a case study of India’s National SDI, the workshop aims to address the challenges in the integration and sharing of spatial data and will offer solutions and strategies to overcome them.
Dr. Siva Kumar Chief Executive Officer, National Spatial Data Infrastructure DEPARTMENT OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY, INDIA
Dr. Kumar has made an outstanding contribution for the growth and use of geospatial technologies, not just in India but also internationally. He is currently the Head of the Natural Resources Data Management Systems (NRDMS) and CEO of the National Spatial Data Infrastructure (NSDI) of the Department of Science & Technology, India. He was instrumental in the modernisation of military survey and the technology upgrade, capacity building as well as establishing the Defence Institute for Geospatial Information and Training (DIGIT) Army Digital Mapping Centre and the NSDI.
Current web-based GIS are insufficient to support application rich eGovernment due to the limitation of HTML. To overcome this limitation, a Rich Internet Application (RIA) approach will be introduced.
